Interior decorating can be scary and intimidating for the single man, but it’s also very important when it comes to attracting women. Fear not my friend, www.ifheonlyknew.com has teamed up with Megan Close of The Cross Design and Decor to help you create a stylish space, without sacrificing you manhood.
It is becoming a big trend recently for single (straight) men to care more about what their place looks like. That’s where I come in. As an Interior Designer in Vancouver, I’m seeing lots of single men who just bought their first place looking for help. It used to be that most men would wait until they shacked up with their lady to do any improvements or updates to furniture or accessories, but not anymore. I’m seeing a lot of small spaces with no direction, hand me downs and sports memorabilia displayed. Here are a few tips to get you started – I mean, you don’t want to be single forever do you?
Living Room Furniture
Usually my single male clients don’t really know what they want to do, they just ‘want it to look cool’. The first thing I do when I walk into their space is figure out if I feel comfortable with the layout of furniture. Usually, all the furniture is facing straight at the TV. If you have places for four people to sit and they’re all facing the TV, how do you expect to have a conversation? Try moving a chair across from your sofa and keep it that way unless you are planning to watch a movie or a game. Try not to arrange the room so that backs of all your furniture are facing the entrance. It cuts off flow through the room and makes it feel less inviting. If your sofa is dirty or looks old its time for a replacement. Sofas are expensive but if you’re careful about what you buy they can last you a long time! It’s usually the main piece of furniture in a room and very important to the overall look. I went to a guys apartment after a date once and it was all very nice except his sofa looked like it was older than him! The idea of sitting down on it made me shutter and there was certainly no way I was about to fool around on it!
Accessorizing
Ok guys, we get it. You love the Canucks! So do I, but unless you’re 15 you don’t need to broadcast it across your apartment. Keep it very minimal, one small piece of collectors memorabilia (maybe on your desk) and the rest should stay in your closet until there’s a game on. This also applies to any gaming equipment (Playstation, xBox, Wii). Girls are looking to settle down with men not boys. It’s ok to have all of this stuff, just tuck it away until it’s in use. It’s not art.

Men usually want a very contemporary space with very few accessories or patterns. I always take that into consideration, but really stress that it is important to have some elements that personalize a room. The biggest mistake that people make is going out and spending a lot in one store on useless things that mean nothing to them and just take up space. I suggest getting some old family photos or photos from a trip and some great frames and putting them up on your wall, or finding an interesting way to display something you’ve kept for years. There’s a reason you moved it from place to place with you right?
You also need some soft elements in a room. Toss pillows and a warm blanket to curl up under scream ‘come over and cuddle’ to a girl. Trust me!

Brilliant!!
“playstation…it’s not art”….so TRUE.
Many men can benefit from this!
Well said Megan!
“Toss pillows and a warm blanket to curl up under scream ‘come over and cuddle’ to a girl. Trust me!” – Truest statement I’ve ever seen! Who doesn’t love to snuggle?!! I do…
OMG this was my boyfriends problem too! Black leather couch, contemporary, huge flatscreen and a playstation to boot….He could have used your expertise Megan! xoxo
I’m sending this to my boyfriend ASAP. X-box is not Art!
You hit the nail on the head with the X-box. It’s for obese people, not hot, successful men.
It’s a good thing you’re the expert, Megan. I would just tell boys to put chandeliers in every room to attract girls… Great advice! Such a snuggler…
